The Avenger is the second studio album by the Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth. It was released on 13 September 1999 via Metal Blade Records. It is the first release on the then-new drummer Fredrik Andersson is heard after the departure of his predecessor, Martin Lopez. In 2005, the album was released as a Picture - LP with a strictly limited edition of 500 copies. 2009, the album was re-released.

Creation and publication history

The album was recorded and mixed by a roughly one-year songwriting process in the Abyss Studios by Peter Tägtgren. The mastering was done by Peter In De Betou in Stockholm's Cutting Room Studios in April 1999. The cover artwork was designed by graphic artist and designer Tom düsseldorfer Ewerhard.

The Avenger Deluxe Reissue

In the course of Bloodshed Over Bochum concert series of Amon Amarth on 28 - 31 December 2008 the album was performed and recorded at 29.12 complete and in full length. On 22 May 2009 The Avenger was re-released as neugemasterte pad along with the live recording as a 2- CD Digipack. The title list corresponds to the digipack version; only in the live version of the album is missing the song Thor Arise, since this was not listed. The concert was also filmed and released on the bonus DVD of Surtur Rising Digipacks on March 25, 2011.

Reception

The album was told by the press and fans mostly positive, albeit rarely euphoric response. Thus, the author per metal.de from Webzine the album 8 out of 10 and described it, despite a lack of originality bonus as Once Sent from the Golden Hall, a worthy successor to the debut album. 7.5 out of 10 points gave Marcel Steinberg metal1.info of the album, describing it as a solid, but not exceptional album that you should have as a fan. One criticism that was often called, was the one with just under 40 minutes relatively short term of the CD.
