The ridge of the Berkshire Mountains in the western part of the U.S. states of Massachusetts and Connecticut.
It extends in a north-south direction to the west of the Connecticut River Pioneer Valley and traversed the east extending along the border with New York Taconic Mountains. The northern continuation of the Green Mountains in Vermont form.
Definition
Sir Francis Bernard, the Royal Governor, named the area " Berkshire " in honor of his home in England.
Geography
The highest point in the Berkshires is Crum Hill ( 866 m), but the average height between 213 m and 365 m. The largest municipalities in the region are Pittsfield, North Adams, Adams, Great Barrington, Williamstown, and Winsted.
