Fairfield County (Connecticut)

Fairfield County is a county located in the state of Connecticut in the United States. It is located in the southwest of the state and had 916 829 inhabitants ( Census 2010) with a population density of 565.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The area of the county comprises 2168 square kilometers, of which 547 square kilometers of water. The largest city is Bridgeport.

Geography

Fairfield County is bordered on the north and east by the county Litchfield and New Haven, in the south on the Long Iceland Sound and the west by the U.S. state of New York. The County is approximately 40 miles from New Haven and around 80 miles from New York City.

History

Fairfield County was one of four Gründungscountys 1666.

According to the census of 2000, there were 882 567 people in the county. There were 324 232 households and 228 259 families. The population density was 545 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 79.31 percent White, 10.01 percent Black or African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 3.25 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 4.70 percent from other races groups; 11.88 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 324 232 households out of which 34.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.5 percent were married couples living together, 11.5 percent were single mothers. 29.6 percent were non-families. 24.0 percent of all households and 9.4 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.18.

Based on the county the population was spread from 25.6 percent population under 18 years, 7.0 percent between 18 and 24 years, 30.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.3 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 65,249, and the median income for a family was $ 77,690. Males had a median income of $ 51,996, women $ 37,108. The per capita income was $ 38,350. 6.9 percent of the population and 5.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. Among them were 8.3 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 6.6 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
