The Chills

The Chills were one of New Zealand indie rock band of the 1980s to the 2000s. The band was a typical representative of Dunedin sounds.

History

The Chills were founded in October 1980 in Dunedin ( New Zealand). The founding members were Martin Phillipps (guitar, vocals ), Peter Gutteridge (guitar, vocals), Alan Haig (drums), Jane Dodd (bass) and Rachel Phillipps (keyboards). In the years up to 1992, there were 14 different line- ups of the band. The only constant member of the band was Martin Phillipps.

The music of Chills was moved from New Zealand label Flying Nun Records. The band played from 1982, various singles, before 1987 their first album, Brave Worlds (produced by Mayo Thompson) grossed, the 1990 Submarine Bells followed. After the release of the 1992 album Soft Bomb the band split up, but in 1996 and 2003 together once more to record the album Sunburnt and EP Stand By.

The greatest hits of the Chills were the songs I Love My Leather Jacket and Heavenly Pop Hit, both reaching the top 5 of the New Zealand charts. Also arrived in the New Zealand Top 5, the two albums Submarin Bells and Soft Bomb. Outside their home country of the band were granted no chart success. In Germany, the Churchill had a stable fan base in the second half of the 1980s. The Frankfurt Radio DJ Klaus Walter, the band played regularly on his show The ball is round. The most famous piece of music of Chills in Germany was the song Pink Frost.
