The Great Giana Sisters ( in the intro and older previous versions also known as The Great Gianna Sisters) is a computer game that was developed in 1987 by Time Warp Productions for the C64 and published by the German software company Rainbow Arts. In this computer game, there is a Jump ' n' Run with strong similarities to Super Mario Bros.. 1988 " Giana Sisters" implemented for Amiga 500 and Atari ST. A few weeks after the release of the Amiga version, it disappeared from not exactly clarified reasons again from the shelves.

History

General

Giana Sisters was from that time still quite unknown, German software manufacturer Time Warp ( inter alia consisting of Armin Gessert (programming), Hendrik Nordhaus (programming ), Manfred Trenz ( graphics ) and Chris Hülsbeck (sound and music) ) and made the small company immediately famous throughout Europe; even overseas developed a growing interest for the game. In the UK, the magazine ZZAP! 64 The Great Giana Sisters, known as " The greatest platform game of all time " ( " The greatest platform game ever "). The fact that Time Warp had sent the game for good reason as a rival to the Nintendo game Super Mario Bros. on the grid, was already apparent in the title on the British box (not German ), which research announced: " The Brothers are History" ( " The brothers are history " ). 1988 Rainbow Arts published the long-awaited by many players for the Amiga version.

Alleged dispute with Nintendo

The Japanese video game maker Nintendo was quickly noticed the great similarity to the trademarked Super Mario Bros.. Already the first level in Giana Sisters had been taken over almost completely without modification of Super Mario Bros. and the game mechanics was that of Super Mario Bros. almost identical. A frequently put forward opinion is that Nintendo saw hurt in his trademark and copyright rights and then went to court against Rainbow Arts and obtained that the game from then on was no longer allowed to be sold. In a short time both the commercially available, only recently published Amiga specimens as well as their counterparts for the home computer Commodore 64 and Atari ST from transport were drawn.

According to the lawyer Andreas Lober however, there is no evidence for a court decision and Armin Gessert was not aware of any such proceedings. Nintendo had therefore, as in other cases previously, probably directly to the bargain, to no longer offer the game.

The alleged dispute with Nintendo made the game known worldwide and as it was no longer available on the market, it had already reached cult status. By black copies, it soon became very widespread. In addition, the original versions of coveted collectibles were, as the game was at least on the Amiga market, one of the rarest. In the years 2005-2008 the price of the original versions of the classic platform in the Internet auction site eBay between 100 and 250 Euro varied, depending on the state of the game and the packaging and the respective system / media on which it appeared. Since the C64 version is longer available in the shops as was the Amiga game, it has a lower value to collectors.
