The Man That Got Away is a song by Harold Arlen (music) and Ira Gershwin ( text ), which was published in 1954.

Arlen and Gershwin wrote "The Man That Got Away " for the film A Star Is Born ( Original title: A Star Is Born, 1954), directed by George Cukor. A major role was Judy Garland, which also presents the song in the film. Garland, who had recorded the song already on 3 September 1953, carried him in the footage in playback in an empty nightclub a couple of friends before, making a total of 27 settings required. The film song gave Judy Garland one of the biggest hits of her career. The Man That Got Away 1955 received an Oscar nomination for Best Song. The American Film Institute took him to the list of AFI's 100 Years ... 100 Songs on.

Judy Garland's recording of the song with the Ray Heinsdorf Orchestra appeared in the United States on Columbia Records ( 40270 ), coupled with Here 's What I'm Here For, in Europe at Philips RB366. The song was recorded in the second half of the 1950s, inter alia, by Georgia Gibbs ( Mercury 70430 ), Ralph Flanagan, Jeri Southern / Sonny Burke, Les Brown / Bing Crosby, Tommy Dorsey, Ella Fitzgerald, Géo Daly, Modern Jazz Quartet with Jimmy Giuffre, Gerald Wiggins, Jane Harvey, Oscar Peterson, Tony Bennett and Sammy Davis junior. In later years he also interpreted Ruby Braff, Julie Wilson, Sheena Easton, Ross Tompkins, Barbara Lea, Rosemary Clooney / Count Basie Orchestra, Bill Charlap, Harold Mabern and Nicki Parrott.
