The Piranhas

The Piranhas were a British New Wave band in the ska and Neomod environment of the 2-tone - time. Musically lets her mix of ska, reggae and mod elements best be compared with the sound of The Beat. Their sound was in the phase in which they had hits, " happy, playful, perfect for dancing ."

Band History

The piranhas were founded in 1977 and originally came from the Brighton punk scene. They became known through their version of the South African folk standards " Tom Hark ". The Kwela song had been a hit in the 1950s for Elias & His Zig Zag Jive Flutes, who had already experienced by Millie Small a ska adaptation. " Tom Hark " was released by Sire Records ( in Germany Hansa International) in 1980 and was in the late summer of 1980, a danceable Top Ten hit in the UK charts. He was also one of British football fans like sung evergreen. He was re- published as " Tom Hark ( We Want Falmer! ) " In a version of Seagulls Ska to record money for the new stadium of the football club Brighton & Hove Albion in 2005.

  • Johnny Helmer - guitar, vocals
  • Reginald Frederick Hornsbury - Bass
  • Zoot Alors - Saxophone

In 1981, the band parted ways. My guitarist and singer Bob Grover published with a new lineup further than The Piranhas - with the addition " featuring Boring Bob Grover - the Man with the Golden Trumpet " - especially in songs Kwela ska sound. In 1982, a version of Lou Busch's " Zambesi " (this time to Dakota Records), the new Piranhas again in the British Top 20
