The Sickness (English for the disease) is the debut album by American alternative metal band Disturbed. It was published on 7 March 2000 via Giant Records and with more than four million units sold in the U.S. alone the best selling album of the band. The album was recorded in the U.S. with quadruple platinum, the single " Down with the Sickness" with platinum.

Formation

For the album, the band went back to songs that have emerged in the years 1998 and 1999 and were released on various demos. The recordings of The Sickness took place in November and December 1999 in the Groove Master Studios in Chicago. The album was produced by Johnny K (born John Karkazis ) and the band. Was mixed by Andy Wallace The Sickness while Howie Weinberg took over the mastering. For the song " Stupify ", " Down With the Sickness" and "Voices" music videos were filmed. The song " Shout 2000 " is a cover version of the song "Shout " by the British band Tears for Fears.

The lyrics of the song " Stupify " contains with " fa ta ched " three words in Hebrew. The German translation is something like " 'm afraid ." The album cover depicts a monster, which was formed by the Company and is being born. The album title represents the philosophy of individuality

Reception

The Sickness is rated mixed reviews. Greb Bastian from Online Magazine Bloodchamber.de praised the " distinctive vocals " by David Draiman and the " exciting trip songwriting ". Greb, awarded the album 9.5 out of ten. Positive commented on Steve Huey of Allmusic. In his opinion, " the band does not have to go far to get total control over their sound " and spoke of an " excellent debut album".

Critical commented Marcus Schleutermann by the German magazine Rock Hard, who criticized the uniformity of the songs and said that singer David Draiman " makes too little of his charismatic voice". Schleutermann gave The Sickness 6.5 out of ten.

The album reached number 29 of the U.S. album charts and was for more than four million units sold in the U.S. awarded quadruple platinum. The single " Down with the Sickness" went platinum in the United States. " Down with the Sickness" is also the seventh most downloaded song in the 2000s in the United States.

Reissues

The Sickness has so far been re-released twice. The first re-release was published on 16 September 2002 on the occasion of the release of their second studio album, Believe, and includes a bonus track "God of the Mind" as well as live versions of the songs " Stupify ," "The Game", " Voices" and " Down with the Sickness ". The live recordings were recorded at a concert on 10 March 2000 in Chicago club The Metro.

On March 23, published in 2010 Reprise Records the so-called 10th Anniversary Edition to mark the tenth anniversary publication. This version includes as bonus the songs "God of the Mind" and " A Welcome Burden " and contains a slightly different cover. In addition, the album is the first time available as a record.
