Theater in der Leopoldstadt

The Leopoldstadt theater was a well-known theater in Leopoldstadt, a former suburb of Vienna in the 18th and 19th centuries. The theater today would be in the same second district of Vienna, in the Prater Road 31 ( the former Jägerzeile ).

History

The Leopoldstadt Theater, which was also the first of the Viennese suburban theater was opened in 1781 by Karl von Marinelli. The Schedules consisted mainly of local and magic antics, parodies and singing games of the Viennese popular theater.

Major actors in this house from this period were Anton Hasenhut, Therese Krones, Johann Nepomuk Nestroy, Johann Joseph La Roche, Ferdinand Raimund and Ignaz Schuster. Enjoyed great success and the comedian trio Karl Blasel, Wilhelm Knaack and Josef Matras.

A successful playwrights of this period was Karl Friedrich Hensler. After the death of director Marinelli, he headed the theater until 1816 as a director. But other playwrights were able to celebrate their successes: Franz Xaver Gewey, Josef Alois Gleich, Friedrich Kaiser Ferdinand Kringsteiner, Karl Meisl, Johann Nepomuk Nestroy, Joachim perinet, Ferdinand Raimund. Nearly already belonged to the inventory of the house composer Wenzel Müller.

From 1821 Ferdinand Raimund staged here as a director and in the years 1828 to 1830, he headed the theater as a director.

After prolonged financial difficulties the Leopoldstadt theater was sold in 1838 to the theater director Carl Carl. This had rebuilt the house designed by architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Null. 1847, was reopened under the name Carl theater. The Carl theater was pulled strongly in the Second World War affected and the ruins demolished in 1951.
