Theo van Scheltinga

Tjeerd ( Theo ) Daniel van Scheltinga ( born March 6, 1914 in Amsterdam, † July 30, 1994 in Beverwijk ) was a Dutch chess master.

Van Scheltinga learned 16 years, the rules of chess. In the Dutch championship in 1936 he finished third. In 1939 he played in Amsterdam a contest with Salo Landau 5:5 ( 3, -3, = 4). In 1944, he won the Hoogovens tournament. In 1947 he won jointly with Max Euwe the Dutch championship, but he was defeated by former World Champion in the subsequent tie-break with 2,5:5,5 ( 0, -3, = 5). In the same year he won a major international tournament in Beverwijk. In 1950 he became an International Master. 1950 and 1952 he was again runner-up in the Netherlands. In 1960 he was at the zone tournament in Budapest and shared second place to fifth, in subsequent reporting battles for the interzonal spaces he left. From 1937 to 1954 he represented the Netherlands in the national team in five Chess Olympiads.
