Tata Steel Chess Tournament

The Tata Steel Chess Tournament (until 1999: Hoogovens tournament until 2010 Corus Chess Tournament ) takes place every year in January in the Dutch town of Wijk aan Zee, a part of Beverwijk in the province of North Holland instead. Until 1999 it was known as Hoogovens tournament ( " tournament blast furnace " ) known to the Dutch steel and aluminum producer Koninklijke Hoogovens merged with British Steel and renamed on 6 October 1999 to Corus. Between 1938 and 1967 the tournament was held in Beverwijk. Following the purchase of Corus by Tata Steel support for the tournament has been questioned, but now is a commitment of the sponsor until 2013. From the 73rd edition in 2011, the tournament is named Tata Steel Chess Tournament.

The tournament take part in both world's elite players, as well as average club players in different sections. The 'A' group, the elite group consists of 14 participants will compete in a round robin tournament against each other. Since 1938 there is a long list of famous winners, including Max Euwe, Bent Larsen, Tigran Petrosian, Paul Keres, Efim Geller, Lajos Portisch, Boris Spassky, Mikhail Botvinnik, Mikhail Tal, Viktor Korchnoi, Jan Timman, Anatoly Karpov, Vladimir Kramnik, Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand and Veselin Topalov. In fact, missing from the classical chess world champions since 1945, only the name of Vasily Smyslov and Bobby Fischer. 2001, nine of the ten best players in part, according to Elo rating list.

The Indian Viswanathan Anand is the only player to have won the Hoogovens / Corus Tournament ( divided three times) in his story five times. Anand is also the only player with a series of 70 consecutive games without defeat ( 1998-2004 ). Max Euwe, Lajos Portisch and Viktor Korchnoi won the tournament four times.

History

Hoogovens Beverwijk

The first tournaments, starting with 1938, were very small and consisted of four participants who were Dutch, respectively. The first five tournaments have been played in this form. 1943 and 1944 took part in eight players. 1945 took place in a tournament because of the Second World War. The first international tournament took place in 1946, with the main tournament was expanded to 10 players. We have sent invitations to the Belgian Alberic O'Kelly de Galway and Sweden Gösta Stoltz next eight Dutch. As a reminder of the humble beginnings of the tournament shortly after the war served until today at the closing ceremony of pea soup. The field was maintained until 1953 in this form than anyone topped up to 12 participants and an international women's tournament joined them. 1954 there was a return to 10 players, but was occupied the field of participants stronger. 1963 was attended by 18 players, but reduced to 16 in 1964, but there was one at that time already one of the strongest tournaments in the world.

To mark the 70th tournament of 2008, a study Tournament was held at which involved 90 composers from 29 countries. Yochanan Afek judges awarded the first prize ex aequo to Yuri and Sergei Rumyantsev Baslow.
