Thomas Burnside

Thomas Burnside (* July 28, 1782 in Newtownstewart, County Tyrone, Ireland, † March 25, 1851 in German Town, Pennsylvania) was an American lawyer and politician. In the years 1815 and 1816, he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1793, Thomas Burnside came with the family of his father from his Northern Ireland homeland after Norristown in Pennsylvania. After studying law and his 1804 was admitted to the bar he began to work in Bellefonte in this profession. On January 12, 1809, he was appointed Deputy Attorney General. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party launched a political career. In the years 1811 and 1812 he was a member of the Senate of Pennsylvania.

After the death of Mr David Bard Burnside was at the election due in the ninth constituency of Pennsylvania as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 10 October 1815. He remained there but a few months until his resignation in April 1816. His resignation took place after his appointment as judge of the judicial district of Luzerne County. This office he held until 1819. Afterwards, he was again a member and in 1823 chairman of the State Senate. Since 1826 until his death, he held various posts for judges in Pennsylvania. He was an Associate Justice from 1845 onwards at the local Supreme Court Thomas Burnside died on 25 March 1851 in German Town near Philadelphia and was buried in Bellefonte.
