Thomas J. Van Alstyne

Thomas Jefferson Van Alstyne ( born July 25, 1827 in Richmondville, New York, † October 26, 1903 in Albany, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Thomas Jefferson Van Alstyne Community schools visited, the Moravia Academy and the Hartwick Seminary. In 1848 he graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton. He studied law in Albany. His admission to the bar he received in 1849 and then began to practice in this city. During the Civil War he served as a Judge Advocate with the rank of Major. Between 1871 and 1882 he was a judge in Albany County. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1882 for the 48th Congress of Van Alstyne was in the 16th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Michael N. Nolan on March 4, 1883. In 1884 he suffered in his re-election bid a defeat and retired after March 3, 1885 the Congress of.

After his conference time he went back to his work as a lawyer after. Between 1898 and 1900 he was the successor of John Boyd Thacher Mayor in Albany. He died there on 26 October 1903 and was then buried in the Albany Rural Cemetery.
