Thomas Patrick Melady

Thomas Patrick Melady ( born March 4, 1927 in Norwich, Connecticut; † January 6, 2014 in Washington, DC) was an American diplomat.

Life

Thomas Melady served from 1945 to 1947 in the U.S. Army. In 1950 he joined a Studiumg at Duquesne University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1955 and studied at the St. John's University with a MA and a Ph.D. from. From 1959 to 1967 Melady was an adjunct professor at St. John's University and president of the Africa Service Institute in New York. From 1966 to 1969 he was an adjunct professor at Fordham University. Melady advised the National Urban League in New York and was president of Seton Hall University.

U.S. President Richard Nixon appointed him in 1969 to the U.S. Ambassador to Burundi. In 1970 he was a senior advisor to the U.S. delegation at the United Nations General Assembly. From 1972 to 1973 he was U.S. Ambassador to Uganda. U.S. President Ronald Reagan appointed Melady on 5 March 1986 for the coordinator for the private sector in the USAID. President George HW Bush appointed him in 1989 to the United States Ambassador to the Holy See.

In 1994 he was Distinguished Visiting Professor at George Washington University in Washington. From 1976 to 1986 he was President before the Sacred Heart University in Fairfield. From 2002 Melady was employed by the consulting firm The Institute of World Politics in Washington.

Thomas Melady was Obedienzritter ( GCMOb ) of the Order of Malta. In 2012 he was a representative of the Roman Curia for the negotiations in Disarmament Affairs (UNODA ) and Arms Trade Treaty (ATT ). He was an advisor to Pope John Paul II in the collapse of the Soviet Union.

He was deputy governor of Constantine Order in the United States. He was involved in the national governing body of the National Conference of Christians and Jews ( National Conference for Community and Justice ) and the International League for Human Rights.

Melady has 17 books and over 180 articles published on topics Africa / Asia and Europe. He was married to Dr. Margaret since 1962 Badum Melady, former President of the American University of Rome; from the marriage comes two daughters.
