Thuringian Holzland

The Thuringian Wood Country is a mountainous country in Thuringia, Germany.

Geographical location

The Thuringian wood land situated in the territory of the city triangle of Hermsdorf, Eisenberg and Stadtroda or between the rivers Saale, White Elster and Orlasenke. It originally consisted of these 8 places: Bad Klosterlausnitz, Hermsdorf, Oberdorf, Reichenbach, Schleifreisen, Sankt Gangloff, Tautenhain and Weissenborn.

Description and History

The forest wealth of the landscape rises the more infertile soils, which have evolved from the sandstones of the Buntsandstein that make up the area developed. For agriculture, the timber land is therefore of limited use.

According to the timber wealth of the area was found here, the once typical professions such as circuit maker, pitch blacksmith, dump Hauer etc. quite frequently. For many years the Thuringian wood land is also used as a recreational area of East Thuringia region and beyond. In warm weather, hiking tourists in small and large groups by the Zeitzgrund or the Eisenberger Muehltal. The mills were rebuilt in large part to public restaurants and the ways largely rehabilitated.

The railway route between Weimar, Jena and Gera ( about Stadtroda Hermsdorf - Klosterlausnitz ) is called wooden runway.
