The dam, completed in 1999 is used to generate electricity in a hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 1200 MW, which is enhanced by additional turbines on 2520 megawatts when completed. The individual turbines have a capacity of 300 MW plus 4 times 6 times 220 MW.

The concrete wall on the water side, which acts as a seal, has an area of ​​180,000 square meters.

The switchgear of the power station is the starting point of a 500 kV HVDC line to Guangzhou.
