Tibor R. Machan

Tibor Machan Richard ( born March 18, 1939), Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Philosophy at Auburn University, holds the RC Hoiles Chair of Business Ethics and Free Enterprise at the Argyros School of Business & Economics at Chapman University in Orange, California.

Biography

Machan studied at Claremont McKenna College (BA in Philosophy, 1965) and at New York University ( MA in Philosophy, 1966 ), and finally received his doctorate in 1971 at the University of California at Santa Barbara ( Ph.D. in philosophy).

Between 1992 and 1993 he was a visiting professor at the United States Military Academy (West Point ). Machan was two years as editor of the magazine "Reason" and for 25 years as editor of the " Reason Papers", an annually published journal for interdisciplinary normative research. He held lectures on business ethics and political philosophy in Europe, South Africa, New Zealand, Georgia, Armenia, and Latin America. Professor Machan currently lives in Silverado, California.

He is currently a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and the Pacific Research Foundation in San Francisco. Machan is also an associate member of the Ludwig von Mises Institute and the Cato Institute. Professor Machan is a freelance columnist, author of more than 100 scientific articles and more than 30 books, most recently Libertarianism Defended, ( Ashgate 2006).

Work

The focus of Machans work is on the political philosophy, in particular on the theory of natural rights. Publications are central to Individuals and Their Rights ( Open Court, 1989) and Libertarianism Defended ( Ashgate, 2006). He also writes regularly on business ethics, an area in which he argues from a neo- Aristotelian point of view. Particular attention are aligned with the right to private property is fundamental for him.

In his writings on epistemology Machan criticized the conception of human knowledge, according to the knowledge of a proposition p is a final, perfect, timeless and completed understanding of p requires. He essentially argues Ayn Rand following for a kontextualle conception of human knowledge. To a certain reputation within professional circles it brought Machan also with his criticism of the concept of animal rights. So he argued in his widely read scientific paper (1991) and his book Putting Humans First " Do Animals Have Rights? ": Why We Are Nature's Favorite ( 2004) for the fact that animal rights do not exist. A detailed exposition of his ethical position can be found in his book Classical Individualism: The Supreme Importance of Each Human Being ( Routledge, 1998).

Articles by Machan appeared among others in the journals American Journal of Jurisprudence, American Philosophical Quarterly, Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Professional Ethics Journal, as well as in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, The American Spectator, American Scholar, and The Freeman and Reason.
