True Tiger flower ( Tigridia pavonia )

The Tiger Flowers ( Tigridia ), also known as tiger lilies and peacock lilies, are a genus of the family of Iris Family ( Iridaceae ). The genus consists of about 45 to 55 species.

Dissemination

Tigridia species occur only in the Neotropics. They are located in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. In Mexico there are about 36 species and six subspecies, of which 29 species and six subspecies are endemic.

Description

Tigridia species grow as a perennial, herbaceous plants. They form tubers with a sheath ( " Tunic " ) as outlasting. At least the Central American species possess only in summer leaves. The arranged fächerig, simple leaves are flat and parallel-veined. The leaf margin is smooth.

The flowers are borne in branched inflorescences. The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. There are two circles, each with three bloom cladding available; the inner circle are smaller. The colors of the bracts range from white to yellow to orange or pink; they often have spots on ( Trivialname! ). They form a Rhipidium. It's just a circle with three fertile stamens present. The stamens are fused along their entire length. Three carpels are fused into one inferior ovary. There are three free pen available. The species that were formerly in the genus Rigidella, are pollinated by hummingbirds. Are formed dreifächerige capsule fruits.

Use

Varieties of the Real Tiger Flower ( Tigridia pavonia ) are used as ornamental plants. The tubers of this type are eaten cooked and taste like sweet potatoes. Raw they do not like.

The genus belongs to the tribe Tigridia Tigridieae in the subfamily Iridoideae. The types of previous genera Ainea Ravenna, cardio stigma Baker, Colima, Fosteria Molseed, Rigidella Lindl., Sessilanthera Molseed & Cruden now belong to Tigridia. Other synonyms for Tigridia Juss. are: Beatonia Herb, Hydrotaenia Lindl..
