Tilly Losch

Tilly Losch (* November 15, 1903 in Vienna, † December 24, 1975 in New York City; native Ottilie Ethel Losch ) was an Austrian dancer, actress, choreographer and painter.

Life

She joined in 1913 in the Ballet School of the Vienna Court Opera and was taken on March 1, 1918 in the corps de ballet, and on 1 February 1921 in the Opera Ballet. On January 1, 1924, she was a principal dancer of the reorganized State Opera. She created among other things the princess tea blooms in the world premiere of the ballet whipped cream on May 9, 1924 ( Music: Richard Strauss) and 1926 the title role in The Phantom alluring.

In 1927, she starred in Max Reinhardt's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Salzburg Festival, for which they also created the choreography. On 31 August 1927, she ended her engagement at the Vienna State Opera.

Losch danced with Harald Kreutzberg on tour and went with Reinhardt to England. In 1928 she was the first time in London on the stage, and soon after in New York. She danced in 1931 in The Band Wagon with Fred Astaire and his sister Adele Astaire.

In 1930 she married the wealthy Englishman Edward James. This funded the ballets of George Balanchine, the Losch had previously met in Berlin. Be Ballerina these ballets created the leading roles in Errante and The Seven Deadly Sins ( according to Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, with the voice of Lotte Lenya ). In 1934, she was divorced from Edward James again.

As early as 1932 they had, encouraged by Max Reinhardt, faces the spectacle. She starred in several films and was still in London and New York in dance halls on the stage. In 1939, she married her second husband Henry Herbert, 6th Earl of Carnarvon. The Countess of Carnarvon nunmehrige turned to paint full time in 1944 and in New York for the first time their images. The marriage with Herbert in 1947 divorced. Losch died of cancer.
