Tipton is a town in Tillman County in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 916 over an area of 1.7 km ². The population density is 539 per km ². Tipton is located about 23 kilometers northwest of Frederick, which the county seat, at the intersection of State Highways 5 and 5C.

History

Originally the settlement was called Farmersville, due to the fertile farmland of the area. For a short period, the city was in Stinson, renamed. WA Stinson but later sold parts of the urban area to investors in Elk City (Oklahoma). 1909 moved the city to take advantage of its location on the new railway line in the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway. The city was named after John J. Tipton, the platoon leader of the first railway train that went on this new route. In 1911, the railway line of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway was taken over. Official founding date of Tipton is 29 Juli 1909. September 18, 1909, the post office was opened. The newspaper The Tipton tips was also established in 1909. In 1910, Tipton had 441 inhabitants. The population reached its peak in 1940 with 1,470. In 1990, it was because of the changes in agriculture only 1,043 inhabitants, since then, the population has continued to decline.

Agriculture

The farmland around Tipton is known for its fertile soil. The loamy soil is called " Tipton loam " and is among the most suitable for agriculture soils of the United States.
