Tisovec

Tisovec ( Theißholz German, Hungarian Tiszolc, latin Taxovia ) is a city in Banskobystrický kraj in southern Slovakia. It is located in the western and eastern parts of the Slovak Ore Mountains on the river Rimava. The name comes from the Slovak word tis ( German yew ).

It was first mentioned in 1334 as Thyzolch / Tyzolch writing and consists of the parts Rimavská Píla ( on 1 January 1979 incorporated ) and Tisovec. The town was founded by German settlers in the 12th century, but the German population dwindled over the centuries. 1596 was the place awarded market rights in 1780 the municipal law.

Until 1918 the village was in the county Gemer and small Hont the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia.

According to the census of 2001, there were 4,215 inhabitants of 95.75 % Slovaks, 2.87% Roma, 0.78% Czechs and 0.43 % Hungarians. The most represented was the Protestant denomination with 32.91 %; to the Roman Catholic faith to 29.54 % and 0.43% Greek Catholic known. 34.59 % were non-denominational.
