Tobias Barreto

Tobias Barreto de Meneses ( born June 7, 1839 in Vila de Campos do Rio Real ( Sergipe ), † June 26, 1889 in Recife ) was a Brazilian philosopher, poet, literary critic and lawyer.

Life and work

Barreto was co-founder of the Escola do Recife, a philosophical movement that propagated the European monism and evolutionism. He established his literary work as well with the Brazilian Condoreirismo.

Honors

Tobias Barreto was chosen by the founders of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, Graça Aranha, as patron of the chair ( cadeira ) 38.
