Tony Ayres

Tony Ayres (* July 16, 1961 in Macau, China) is an Australian screenwriter and film director.

Life

Ayres was born in Macao, China. His single Chinese mother, a nightclub singer, moved to his home to Perth, Western Australia and died in 1972 by suicide than Ayres was 11 years old. Three years later, his stepfather died of a heart attack. Ayres and his sister were then raised by her former history teacher. He later moved to Canberra. The film The Home Song Stories is based on the childhood experiences of Ayres.

Ayres studied photography and journalism at the Australian National University in Canberra and then film and video at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Victoria. After graduation, he worked as a screenwriter and film director in Australia.
