Tony Vega

Tony Vega ( born July 13, 1957 in Salinas / Puerto Rico ) is a Puerto Rican salsa singer.

Career

Tony Vega was born into a musical family and learned early to play bongos and congas. At the age of ten years he was a member of a children's band called " La Preferida ". His family moved in 1968 to New York City, where Vega went to school. In his spare time played for various Latin rock bands such as " City Trash". He developed a great passion for Afro- Antillean music styles from which later developed into the salsa. From artists like Ismael Rivera, Rafael Cortijo, Rafael and El Gran Combo de Ithier Puerto Rico, he was strongly influenced. After his graduation in 1978 he was accepted by the band " La Selecta ", which was directed by Raphy Leavitt. His songs " Cosquillita ", " Sheila Taina " and "El Picaflor " were big hits. In 1980 he made ​​during a live performance acquaintance with Willie Rosario. From 1981 to 1986 he was a member of his combo. At that time, Gilberto Santa Rosa singer of this group. Private

Tony Vega has largely withdrawn from his many live performances and professes to be a " born again Christian ".
