Toronto Stock Exchange

The Toronto Stock Exchange ( TSX) is Canada's largest stock exchange, the third largest stock exchange in North America and the sixth largest exchange in the world. It is operated by the company TMX Group. A large number of companies from Canada, the United States and other countries are listed on Toronto Stock Exchange. The TSX has its headquarters, built in 1981, Exchange Tower in the financial district of Toronto, and has additional offices in Montreal, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver. Benchmark indices are the S & P / TSX 60 and the S & P / TSX Composite Index.

The former name was TSE, as an abbreviation for Toronto Stock Exchange. However, this was abandoned in favor of the TSX. TSE is currently used by the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

History of the Exchange

The Stock Exchange Toronto was probably out of the Association of Brokers, a company founded on July 26, 1852 Association of stockbrokers. From the Transactions of this Association no records have been preserved. On October 25, 1861, 24 businessmen met in the building of the Masonic Lodge and founded the Toronto Stock Exchange. By 1878, passed by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario Act, the Exchange received official status.

The TSX grew steadily in size and number of traded equity securities. She graduated in 1914 briefly for three months, for fear of a financial panic at the beginning of the First World War. In 1934 it merged with its main competitor, which specializes in mining standard Stock and Mining Exchange. In 1977, the TSX is a computer- based trading system CATS. In 1997 the trading floor has been set and all switched to electronic trading. 1999 Barbara G. Stymiest was the first female president of a North American stock exchange.

Trading Hours

The trading hours on the TSX are weekdays from 9:30 bis 16:00 clock, the hours trading takes place from 16:15 bis 17:00 o `clock. On weekends and public holidays, the stock market is closed.

Presence

In the year 2008 3841 companies were listed on the TSX. On the stock market all the major banks are listed: CIBC, Bank of Montreal, Bank of Nova Scotia, Royal Bank of Canada and the Toronto - Dominion Bank. In addition, several energy companies listed on the stock exchange: Air Canada, Cameco Corporation, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd., Canadian Oil Sands Trust, EnCana Corporation, Husky Energy Inc., Imperial Oil Ltd.. . and Nexen Inc.

Merger plans

In November 2010, the TMX Group had announced to want 2011 to open an office in London. In February 2011, planning for the merger of the Toronto Stock Exchange with the London Stock Exchange were announced. On 29 June 2011 announced both sides that the merger agreement was already made obsolete because the necessary support was failed by the shareholders and a Canadian consortium of investors have submitted a counter-offer.
