The Toulon-Hyères Airport ( Aéroport de Toulon -Hyères ) is the airport of the southern French city of Toulon and is located in the département of Var. It is used by both military and civil. The civilian part of the airport is managed by the Chamber of Commerce Var. The military sector is referred to by the Marine Nationale d' aéronautique as base navale d'Hyeres Le Palyvestre. Following the closure of Naval Air base at Nîmes 2011 Hyeres airport is the only remaining base of the French naval aviation in the south of the country.

History

The use of today's airport by the French Navy begamnn 1925 as Centre d' Aviation Maritime du Palyvestre as a land base for the carrier warplanes of the Béarn. The operation of seaplanes began 1928. The base was closed in November 1942 and heavily damaged during the Allied landing in Provence in the summer of 1944.

After the war, the Marine Nationale built a training center for the crews of first propellergetrienbenen carrier aircraft. Along with the commissioning of the two aircraft carriers of the Clemencau class began in 1961 the Jet flight operations.

The temporarily stationed in Hyères operational squadrons laid over the 60s in Brittany, and the airport was opened for a parallel civil flight operations. Later were here were only helicopter units, the French types, but also ( to 2012) equipped with Sea Lynx.

The airport is served by Air France, Ryanair, Jetairfly and Transavia. Direct flight destinations are Paris, Stockholm, Bristol, Ajaccio, London, Brest, Brussels and Rotterdam.
