Tower Division

The Tower Division, commonly known as Tower Hamlets, was a British administrative unit. The Liberty was in the Hundred of Ossulstone in the Ancient County of Middlesex. Originally a rural area developed here in the 19th century, the East End of London. The residents were direct subjects of the constable of the Tower of the Tower of London. The Liberty existed from the early 18th century to 1889. She was about 30 km ² and in 1881 had more than one million inhabitants.

In 1832 the Tower Division formed a special constituency for the House of Commons. This was called Tower Hamlets and put two deputies. In 1889 the Tower Division became part of the County of London. The London Borough of Tower Hamlets named after the Liberty since 1965.
