Traverse City (French " le grand traverse ," engl. " The great crossing", dt, " the big crossing " ) is with a population of 14,500 ( as of 2000) to Marquette, the second largest city in the north of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located on the Grand Traverse Bay that departs from Lake Michigan. This bay is divided by a peninsula, the Old Mission Peninsula.
Activities
Traverse City is surrounded by much more primitive and unspoilt nature and water, such as rivers, lakes and bays.
There is a zoo and a marina as well as a historic downtown area. There are also 50 art galleries and museums in the city and surrounding areas.
Great importance has now also initiated by Michael Moore -annual Traverse City Film Festival.
Traffic
Traverse City has its own airport, the " Cherry Capital Airport ," which also fly to major airlines. The distance from Chicago from measures 305 miles and 242 miles from Detroit.
Of the original three buses that have Traverse City daily connected with the rest of Michigan, now runs only one. The Indian Trails bus comes from St. Ignace and leaves Traverse City to Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Chicago.
A highway connection has not Traverse City. The nearest motorway junction is either in Cadillac ( about half an hour south ), or about an hour east of Traverse City.
Cherry Capital
Traverse City describes itself as " Cherry Capital of the World" ( cherry capital of the world ) and every year for eight days in July (National Cherry Festival ) takes place there, the " National Cherry Festival". A special event is in this region, the cherry blossom time of the 3 million cherry trees, then acts as the entire area in a white veil wrapped. In autumn, leaves the Indian Summer admire here.
