Treinta y Tres is a city in the east of Uruguay and capital of the department of Treinta y Tres.

Location and description

The city, located in sector 1 of the department, located at the confluence of the river Río Olimar and the small river Arroyo Grande Yerbal. It is a typical town of the interior with flat buildings and narrow sidewalks that are adorned with leafy trees.

Origin of the name

The town's name refers to the 33 Uruguayans who were sent into exile in Argentina. On the morning of April 19, 1825, they returned secretly to continue the struggle for independence. They found the area, which at that time also Banda Oriental was called, because it is east of the Río Uruguay is besieged by the Portuguese- Brazilian armed forces. In the city center you will find the large square called Plaza 19 de Abril, which houses the monument of the 33 Orientales. It consists of black, white and reddish marble.

Economy

Treinta y Tres is located in the catchment basin of the wetland Laguna Merín, which makes the rice growing into the most important economic activity in the province. One can also find some of the most important companies trading with rice.

Treinta y Tres is connected via the Ruta 18 with Rio Branco, with Montevideo and the Cerro Largo Department of the Ruta 8

Treinta y Tres had female in the census in the year 2011 25.477 inhabitants, of which 11,937 male and 13,540.
