Treponematosis

Under a Treponematose refers to a bacterial infection in humans and animals caused by bacteria of the genus Treponema. The human treponematoses are referred to with the exception of syphilis as a tropical treponematoses.

  • Treponematoses in humans:
  • Syphilis ( Treponema pallidum ssp. Pallidum )
  • Yaws ( Treponema pertenue )
  • Pinta ( Treponema carateum )
  • Bejel, Endemic Syphilis ( Treponema pallidum ssp. Endemica )
  • Treponematoses in animals:
  • Rabbit syphilis ( Treponema paraluiscuniculi )

Some diseases caused by treponemes are triggered only when there is a simultaneous co-infection with other bacterial species. This only facultative pathogenic treponemes are then usually associated with microaerophilic or strictly anaerobic bacteria such as Campylobacter, Bacteroides and Fusobacterium. Mixed infections with the latter also referred to as Fusotreponematosen. This treponematoses by mixed infections are the Plaut -Vincent angina in humans ( Treponema vincentii and Fucobacterium nucleatum ) and the toes dermatitis in cattle ( Treponema denticola Treponema brennaborense or associated with Campylobacter faecalis or Bacteroides levii )
