Trhovište

Trhovište (Hungarian Vásárhely ) is a town in eastern Slovakia, with 1874 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). Administratively it belongs to the Okres Michalovce, which is a part of the district Košice kraj. According to Census 2001 (1.703 inhabitants) Trhovište is almost exclusively Slovak ( 97.3 %), with a small Roma minority ( 1%).

Geography

The municipality is located in the East Slovak Lowland at the height of 130 m nm In the western city of Bach Rakovec flows past, just before the confluence with the Ondava. Trhovište is located on the Highway 50 and 11 kilometers from each Sečovce and Michalovce.

History

The place was probably around 1100, at an intersection of two streets, where there was a market. Both Slovak and Hungarian name mean "place, which hosts a market." The first recorded mention is from the year 1220 as Vasarhel. From the 14th until the 17th century the village belonged to the Drugeth family and joined him on the estate of Castle Brekov. In the 16th and 17th centuries here toll was even raised. But after peaking in the late 16th century, there was a long-term decline. In 1828 there were 101 houses and 754 inhabitants.

Until 1919 part of which is in the county Semplin place the Kingdom of Hungary and was then Czechoslovakia.
