Tugay Bey

Tuhaj Bey ( Crimean Tatar Togay bey, Polish Tuhaj - bej, Ukrainian Тугай - бей, Russian Тугай - бей, actually arginine Doğan Togay Bey, † June 30, 1651 ) was an important political and military leader of the Crimean Tatars in the 17th century.

Life

Tuhaj descended from the arginine family, one of the noble families of the Krimkhanats. His full name was arginine Doğan Bey Togay. The title of Bey, he was the administrator of the Perekop Sanjak, a strategic position of Krimkhanats, as the Isthmus of Perekop was crucial to his defense.

He supported the Khmelnytsky Uprising in today's Ukraine against Polish rule in which he with up to 20,000 Crimean Tatars military stood at the side of the Zaporozhian Cossacks against Poland - Lithuania in 1648. He participated during the Cossack uprising in several battles. He fell at the battle of Beresteczko 1651st

Tuhaj Bey was immortalized in the novel With Fire and Sword of Henryk Sienkiewicz.
