With Fire and Sword

With Fire and Sword (Polish Ogniem i Mieczem ) is a historical novel by the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz and the first part of a trilogy that continues with the novels Flood (1886 ) and Mr. Wołodyjowski ( 1888).

Description

The plot of the historical epic set in the years 1648-1651 and focuses on the rebellion of the Cossacks under Bohdan Khmelnytsky Hetman of Ukraine, which was then under Polish rule. The novel was published in 1884 in Warsaw. The story was at times the partitions of Poland and the Polish readership should serve to " strengthen the heart."

Filming

In 1999, the eponymous Polish film Ogniem i was on the basis of the book Mieczem directed by Jerzy Hoffman. The three-hour epic film is the last of the three adaptations of novels by the Nobel Prize winner Henryk Sienkiewicz trilogy of Polish. The works, however, were filmed in reverse chronological order.

The female lead was occupied with the internationally known Polish- Swedish actress Izabella Scorupco. Hoffman received for his implementation of the historical material in 2000, the Polish Film Award.

The available also in German synchronization film ( under the title With Fire and Sword ) is assessed positively by critics mainly because of its elaborate equipment. The costumes and scenery correspond exactly to the historical models and differ so markedly from many Hollywood productions. Hoffman's team was advised by well-known Polish and Ukrainian historians and researchers weapons that are in the credits.
