Tumusla River

The Río Tumusla is a river in the Andes mountains of southern Bolivia.

The river has a total length of 303 km and flows through the department of Potosí and Chuquisaca Department in the northwest -southeast direction. The source region of the river is about 20 kilometers northeast of the snow and ice covered volcano Nuevo Mundo at an altitude of about 4,850 m. Unlike in Central Europe Bolivian rivers do not run very often a single name from the source to the mouth, but bear for successive river sections with different names. So wearing the Tumusla in its course the name Río Llápá, Río Yura, Río Tacora, Río Toropalca and Río Chati until it reaches the village Tumusla 110 km before its mouth.

The Río Tumusla flows past the municipalities Yura, Toropalca and Tumusla and reached near the village of Villa Abecia the Río San Juan del Oro. This bears from the Tumusla estuary the name Río Camblaya and flows over the Río Pilaya in the Pilcomayo River, part of the river system of the Río de la Plata.

The Río Tumusla crosses on its way four provinces in the Potosí Department, the province and the province Antonio Quijarro chichas Nor, in the department of Chuquisaca Nor Cinti, the province and the province of Sud Cinti.

The river has dug deep into the barren mountain landscape, its river bed has long stretches a width of less than 50 meters. The region along the river course is populated only low due to the high relief energy, agriculture is mainly due to the alluvial fans along the Río Tumusla.
