Tung Chung

Tung Chung (Chinese东涌) is a place in Hong Kong on Lantau Iceland with a population of 80,000. The place is marked by the City Project North Lantau New Town, in the 1990s, in the years Tung Chung was expanded into a modern satellite town.

Tung Chung is on the Tung Chung Bay to the north of Lantau Iceland administrative law in direct proximity to the Hong Kong International Airport and is part of the Islands District.

North Lantau New Town

North Lantau New Town is the youngest New Town Development Project in Hong Kong. The city was designed to support the infrastructure of the nearby Hong Kong International Airport ( "supporting community" ). The concept was developed in the North Lantau Development Study in 1992 and saw an implementation in four phases. In each phase Landaufschüttung was provided for the recovery of new building land.

With the completion of Phase 4, the city should accommodate 210,000 inhabitants, with potential for expansion to 260,000 inhabitants. After changing the development plans, the planned population was increased to 320,000. Phase 1 was completed in 1997 and Phase 2 in 2001. The completion of Phase 3 was originally planned for 2006 and Phase 4 in 2011, the execution of the project has been suspended. The further development is being planned, with Tai Ho is the exception, after the bay was declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( nature reserve) in 1998.

Until the construction of the airport and North Lantau New Town of Tung Chung was a fishing village with less than 2000 inhabitants.

Demography

According to the 2011 Census living in Tung Chung 78,000 inhabitants. The proportion of residents who have no Chinese origin, with 10.9% higher than the Hong Kong average of 6.4%. The age structure is compared to the Hong Kong average of slightly more people up to 14 years and a little less people over 65 years, which is typical for a newly founded New Town. The employment rate is 62.1 %. Due to the proximity to the airport are 18.5 % higher than average number of employees employed in the transport sector.

Geography

Tung Chung, located mostly on flat land that has been reclaimed from the sea. The metropolitan area is bounded to the south by the mountains of Lantau Island. To the west of the city center, there is a 50 meter high hill.

Although Tung Chung has no industrial plants, air quality is slightly worse than the average Hong Kong. Smog occurs at one of four days, compared with an average of six days in Hong Kong. In 2004, the Environmental Protection Ministry of Tung Chung gave 40 days to the second highest air pollution level Very High. The majority of air pollution comes from Chinese industrial plants in the Pearl River Delta.

Heritage

At the Tung Chung Road ( 22 ° 16 ' 40 "N, 113 ° 56 ' 10" O22.277747113.936001 ) is the weir Tung Chung Fort, which was built in 1832 by Chinese troops to fight against pirates. The plant was equipped with six coastal guns that can be seen in the listed building, restored fort today.

In the temple is a bell, the engraving refers to the year 1765 and to the Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. Traffic

The Tung Chung Line of the Mass Transit Railway travels from Tung Chung on Kowloon to Central. The route is largely identical to the Airport Express, which, however, does not hold in Tung Chung.

About the Route 8 Tung Chung is connected to the motorway network in Hong Kong. The road connecting the under construction Hong Kong -Zhuhai - Macao Bridge will not lead directly by Tung Chung, but connect near Tung Chung to the Route 8.

In Tung Chung North there is a pier where ferries leave for Tuen Mun and Tai O after the west of Lantau Iceland.

In the city center is the station of the cable car Ngong Ping 360, which leads to the tourist spot of Tian Tan Buddha.
