The Turning Torso is in Western Harbour, the Western Harbour area of Malmö, in the immediate vicinity of the Sound, in an area in which developing since 2001, a new, self-contained modern residential area.

Construction

The construction of the torso is based on a sculpture by Calatrava, the so-called "Twisting Torso ", which is a shot in to the human torso. Johnny Örbäck, former CEO of HSB, was so fascinated by this sculpture that he commissioned Calatrava to design the skyscraper.

Was built in the torso as Büro-/Wohnturm. The building was ( cube-like parts of buildings) on each set of nine cubes with five floors and a mezzanine. Each floor is rotated by about 1.6 ° to the underlying basement. Thus the building turned on the full height by 90 ° so that the tower gives the impression that he would rotate about its own axis.

Overall, the tower has 54 floors, each 400 m² area. Each floor consists of a floor plan part with curved facade (cube façade ) and a floor plan unit with a straight facade ( spine façade ). The concrete core with the development of surface has an inner diameter of 11.6 meters and is supported by an external steel structure. The facade of the building contains approximately 2,500 windows with a glass surface by a total of approximately 5,500 m².

In the inner core of the tower there are five lifts. Three of them reach a speed of 5 m / s (18 km / h) the living area. From the ground floor to the top floor of an elevator needed without interruption 38 seconds. In the office setting, there are two slightly slower lifts ( 3.5 m / s and 12.6 km / h).

To meet the wind conditions in the harbor area just, you put the steel construction so that the tower s moves at its peak even with a wind of 44 m / maximum of only 30 cm. Therefore, this motion is hardly noticeable in the interior of the building.

In the two lowest cubes offices were settled with an area of approximately 4,000 m², the lowest cube advised the owner company HSB own offices a. In the upper cubes are a total of 147 apartments and apartments with a size of 45 m² to 190 m². The total floor area is approximately 13,500 m².
