Turrialba Volcano

Turrialba volcano from the west

The Turrialba is a volcano in the Central American Republic of Costa Rica.

It is located northeast of Cartago, right next to the Irazu and rises 3,325 m above the landscape. This makes it the second highest volcano in Costa Rica after the Irazu. It consists mainly of andesite and is equipped with four craters, one of which is the most north-easterly of the oldest and already extinct.

In the 19th century there were several explosive eruptions with pyroclastic flows, the last eruption was 1866.

Since January 2006, the Turrialba is active again. Settlements in the vicinity of the crater were then temporarily evacuated.
