Twin towers

The twin tower (singular ) refers to architecture a particular building type, which is characterized by the culmination of a single building with two towers, while the Twin Towers ( plural) a characteristic ensemble of two to each other standing tower structures referred to, are the most different technical purposes.

Not to be used the terms " twin tower " and " Twin Towers " for two towers that are built on historic buildings in parts of the building such as the two gate towers of a castle or the twin tower facades of religious buildings form. The latter are differentiated according to their position relative to the total building referred to as either western towers, or as north or south tower.

Twin tower (singular )

The singular form " twin tower " is common rather for historic buildings. It denotes a building that appears visually as it consists of two towers, for example, because it bears two peaks. Representative of this are

Twin Towers ( plural)

The plural form " twin towers " means in modern high-rise buildings, a complex of two to similar or related individual buildings. Greatest fame while the temporary tallest building in the world and destroyed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 World Trade Center in New York City. Built in 1973 World Trade Center was repeatedly, albeit in a modified form copied. For example, in 1984 opened towers of the Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt am Main or in the was completed in 1996 Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from its completion until 2003 also the tallest building in the world.

Other twin towers

Twin Towers are not only found in high-rise construction and the construction of representative buildings. Also, for purely technical purposes characteristic tower twins were built at numerous locations, which were realized in all the usual in tower construction both with and without connecting elements between the buildings. Most of these constructions see as a transmission tower or pylon use. A service executed as a twin tower observation tower is the Schoenberg tower in Pfullingen.

Twin Towers with rigid connection are usually built in the form of portal masts or antenna support for an extensive number of antennas, which are geared to a certain area. Examples of twin towers, which are connected with ropes, are, for example, supporting structures of T antennas or crossing mast of overhead line crossing wide rivers and straits, as usually two very similar structures are used in both cases.

Twin Towers without cable connections are often used as a two-mast directional antenna for long and medium wave transmitter. More rarely, at least in Germany the establishment of such twin towers as a pure carrier antenna for radio services in the VHF range.
