Crossing pylon

A cross pole ( the line crosses an obstacle, hence the name) is an electricity pylon for the realization of an overhead line crossing above a wide river, a strait or a valley.

Need crossing poles for crossing valleys when the topography of the valley allows a suitable cable routing, not to be very high. However, must be between the conductor cables a sufficient distance to be present for when approaching a short circuit between the ropes in strong winds or frost is prevented. For this reason, these as pylons also for crossing wide rivers and straits always wider trusses. For very large spans can be seen for each phase before its own mast, which allows lower masts. So that the distance between the phases can be chosen freely.

Crossing poles for crossing wide rivers and straits, especially in flat topography are usually very high structures to ensure the headroom needed for ships.

Special crossing masts are often found at the places where a cableway away via an overhead line. This sometimes masts are used to ensure a scaffolding of the overhead line in the crossover section. This measure allows the event of an accident, the rescue of passengers from the cable car, without having to switch off the line. Such constructions can be found south of Zermatt, at the Patscherkofelbahn in Innsbruck and at the Penkenbahn in Mayrhofen.

A list of known hybrids can be found under overhead line crossing.
