Ubald

Ubald of Gubbio (actually Ubaldo Baldassini, * to 1080/85 in Gubbio, † May 16, 1160 ) was bishop of Gubbio and was canonized.

He was born in a noble family in Gubbio in Umbria in Italy. His parents died early, so he grew up in a monastery. 1114 Ubald was ordained a priest and sharing his heritage to the poor. Probably Ubald 1129 was appointed by Pope Honorius II as Bishop of Gubbio, after he had previously rejected the election as Bishop of Perugia. Today there are in Gubbio, a festival in honor of the Holy Ubald, the Corsa dei Ceri ( the wax candles run).

The Pope Celestine III. spoke Ubald on March 5, 1192 holy.

The Holy Ubald is represented in episcopal garb with a receding before him the devil; he is regarded as the patron of children, as well as a patron against nervous disorders and obsession.

A finger relic of Ubald is venerated in the cathedral in Thann in Alsace.
