Ukrainian wine

Viticulture in the Ukraine has a centuries-old tradition, produced mainly for the domestic market, the neighboring countries, the European Union and North America.

History

Viticulture was operated in the 4th century BC by Greek colonists in the Crimea. In the 11th century Orthodox monks led the wine in a northerly regions around Kiev.

Under Catherine II (1729-1796) the Crimea in 1783 was Russian. Mikhail Vorontsov put 1820 a large winery near Yalta. The Institute of Viticulture Magarach was founded in 1828. Lev Golitsyn built after the Crimean War the first " sparkling wine" ( Krimsekt ) on his estate Novyi Svet near Yalta on. Under Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918) founded the winery Massandra. Ukraine was during the Soviet era, the most important wine suppliers of the USSR. 1986 large parts of the goods were destroyed during the anti-alcohol campaign under Gorbachev. Since 2000, the production is increasing again.

The main varieties are Aligoté, nutmeg, Isabella, Traminer, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Fetească, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Rkatsiteli.

Sparkling wines

The production of sparkling wines as Krimsekt growing. The main production facilities are in Kiev, Artemivsk, Lviv, Odessa and Kharkiv. The production is based on Pinot Blanc, Aligoté, Riesling, Matrassa and Fetească.
