UNI Records

UNI Records (Universal City Records ) was an American record company that published from 1967 to 1972 plates of the different genres of popular music.

History

The record company UNI Records was founded under its official name Universal City Records in 1966 by the U.S. media company MCA as a subsidiary. The initiators were the MCA Director Ned Tanen and Russ Regan, the former MCA president and well-known music promoter. Regan later became general manager of UNI. As Hollywood headquarters was chosen. Initially it was envisaged that UNI should publish mainly rock and psychedelic music, later the repertoire to jazz, soul, country and comedy plates has been extended. The first record productions were brought to market in 1967. Successful performer in UNI Records were Neil Diamond, Elton John and the psychedelic rock band Strawberry Alarm Clock. Elton John began his U.S. career at UNI, where he brought out his first five albums for the North American market. Also, Olivia Newton - John's first U.S. album was released on UNI. In addition to the Brits Elton John and Olivia Newton-John released UNI 1968-1969 three singles of the British pop star Cliff Richard, but could not compete in the U.S. market. 1972 created the new MCA Label MCA Records, as future partners for the performers so far contracted with Decca, Kapp and Uni. The UNI- catalog, which had begun in 1967 with the number 55001, was closed after the catalog number 55356. In the years 1988 and 1989 revived the label MAC UNI again for a short time. Then it finally disappeared from the market. Between 1967 and 1972, UNI had released about 360 singles and 140 LPs. In the phase from 1988 to 1989 again appeared six LPs.
