United Nations Humanitarian Air Service

The humanitarian air service of the United Nations ( engl. United Nations Humanitarian Air Service UNHAS ) or WFP / ODTL / Aviation Section is an airline of the United Nations, which is managed by the World Food Programme ( WFP). The company's headquarters in Rome (Italy). Field offices (regional safety offices, RASO ) there are in Nairobi (Kenya ), Johannesburg ( South Africa) and Islamabad ( Pakistan).

The airline was established initially in 2001 for humanitarian purposes, but the United Nations, each institution may only use the Services. It is especially used for passenger transport. However, the main purpose is to supply the world's population in need, such as natural disasters.

The almost exclusively leased aircraft and helicopters are completely white (peace) painted and carry the signature UN or United Nations. Furthermore, flying the flag of the United Nations.

UNHAS is working closely with the United Nations Joint Logistics Center. At Brindisi Airport ( Southern Italy), the United Nations UN Humanitarian Rapid Response Base are two bodies of the United Nations: The United Nations Logistic Base ( UNLB ) and the United Nations Humanitarian Response Depot ( UNHRD ). This is often served to accommodate the relief supplies. Here is an Ilyushin Il- 76 of the UNHAS was stationed until 2006. Brindisi is therefore regarded as the technical basis of the UNHAS.
