United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara

The mission of the Nations Unies pour l' Organisation d'un Referendum au Sahara occidental, short MINURSO (English: United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) is a United Nations mission and was in April 1991, on the recommendation of the UN Secretary General of UN Security Council used; the mandate includes monitoring the ceasefire in Western Sahara, as well as the holding of a referendum, to be elected to its frame between integration into the Moroccan government and independence.

The maximum thickness of the observer mission is 237 people. Currently (as of May 31, 2013) belong to 228 people in the Mission ( 197 military observers, 25 military personnel and six members of civilian police units). The military is headed by Major General Imam Edy Mulyono from Indonesia.

The - due to the failure to be so far referendum and the still unresolved status of the territory - regularly renewed mandate of the mission was extended most recently on April 25, 2013 by Resolution 2099 of the UN Security Council until 30 April 2014. The German Wolfgang Weisbrod -Weber was appointed by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki -moon as the new Special Representative for Western Sahara and Head of MINURSO on 15 June 2012.

The approved 12 - month budget for MINURSO currently amounts to 60.4757 million U.S. dollars. Of which 24.0962 million U.S. dollars solely for civilian employees, 6.715 million U.S. dollars for the military and police and 14.9347 million for air transport.

German participation

The Federal Government has approved the participation of up to four officers of the Bundeswehr on October 16, 2013, and thus responds to a UN request of 16 September 2013. The cabinet decision is of indefinite duration until the end of the mission.
