Sporting career

1953 Palu won the Estonian Championship titles in the high jump, but specialized short time later on the decathlon. Two years later he won the Estonian Championship in this discipline. He repeated throughout his career until 1964 five more times this success. In the Soviet Championship he won the silver medal in this year. In 1956 he qualified with a third place for the Olympic Summer Games 1956 in Melbourne. Despite bests in the shot put, javelin and high jump, he had to settle for fourth place. In 1958, he won the Soviet Championship title in the decathlon, finishing in fifth place in the year leaderboard. At the European Championships in Stockholm he won the silver medal behind Vasiliy Kuznetsov. In 1960, he won again the bronze medal at the Soviet Championship and improved the Estonian record 7598 points.

During his career, he not only increased several times the Estonian record in the decathlon, but also made records in the 110- meter hurdles, 200 - meter hurdles and 400 - meter hurdles on. From 1955 to 1958, he won four consecutive Estonian champion in 110- meter hurdles. In 1957 he also won the 200 - meter hurdles.
