Urania Mella Serrano

Urania Mella Serrano ( * November 15, 1899 in Vigo, † May 26 1945 in Lugo) was a Galician politician and forerunner of feminism. She was the President of the Anti-Fascist Women's Union, which in Spain was one of 50,000 members in 1936 and a section of the international Frauenvereinignug against War and Fascism was. She was also a member of the International Red Aid.

Life

Urania Mella Serrano was born in 1899 in Vigo. She had twelve brothers. Her father was the anarchist intellectuals Ricardo Mella Cea. Her mother was Esperanza Serrano, daughter of Juan Serrano Oteiza, a well-known anarchists from Madrid and publisher of the magazine Revista Social. She received a modern non- religious nature education and studied fine art at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vigo. She was socially and culturally very active and sat among other things, a, illiterate women to teach reading and writing.

Urania Mella was married to Solleiro Humberto Rivera and had four children.

After the military coup in 1936 was followed Urania Mella by the authorities because of their social commitment. She had to flee with her husband to Redonela where both eventually arrested and convicted by a court martial to death. Urania Mellas sentence was later commuted to a 12 -year sentence. The judgment of her husband Solleiro Humberto Rivera, however, was carried out.

She was detained in the prison of Santurrarán Gipuzkoa. After nine years, she was released. A month after her release, she died at the age of 45 in Lugo from a brain tumor.
