Urho Peltonen

Urho Peltonen Pellervo ( born January 15, 1893 in Nurmes; † May 4, 1950 in Helsinki) was a Finnish javelin thrower, who participated in 1912-1924 in three Olympic Games and won two medals.

  • At the games in Stockholm in 1912 launched the 19 -year-old, both in single and in beidarmigen javelin. The former rule according to which only the three best thrower qualifying for the finals were admitted. In the one-armed throw Peltonen was not among them: his best qualifying distance of 49.20 meters put him in 9th place, more than six feet behind the third place, the Hungary Mór Koczan. In beidarmigen throwing it also did not occur to the finals - because none at all took place, since the three skilled throwers were all Finns and wanted to accept their rankings from the qualification as an end result. So Julius Saaristo won with 109.42 m before Väinö Siikaniemi with 101.13 m, while Peltonen with 100.24 m won bronze. His longest jump with both the right and the left arm was lower than that of Saaristo and Siikaniemi.
  • In the first few games of the post-war period in Antwerp in 1920, he joined again in appearance, with a significant increase in performance: With 63,50 m he won the qualification. In the final, however he could not be improved in contrast to his compatriot Jonni Myyrä and thus won "only" silver behind Myyrä, the densely came up with 65.78 on his world record of 66.10 m.
  • In his third at the Olympics in Paris in 1924 Peltonen again fell victim to the qualification rule: As a seventh with 55.67 meters, he retired almost, because only the best six throwers had three more attempts. Again triumphed Jonni Myyrä. Peltonen would have had to throw 2.70 meters for a medal as the third place winner, the American Eugene colonel, came to 58.35 m.
