The Emory S. Land (AS -39 ) is the lead ship of the Emory S. Land - class, the latest submarine tender class of United States Navy. The ship was named after Admiral Emory S. Land.

History

The Emory S. Land was the first submarine tender new building since the L. Y. Spear class. It was developed to support the boats of the then new Los Angeles-class and care for them. She was laid down in 1976 at the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company in Kiel and ran in May 1977 by the stack.

The ship provides the crews of the submarines with equipment, food, consumer goods, medical care, marine internal legal and administrative support and post. The ship has every imaginable supply and repair facilities including several shops, where the U- boat crews can buy.

In September 1980, the Emory S. Land of the Pacific Fleet was assumed to serve as part of the Indian Ocean Battle Group. In July 1986, it served as Officer in Tactical Command of the ship for four U.S. warships and five other ships of friendly naval forces in the laying of a multinational federation of the Virginia Capes in New York Harbor. During this surgery, she took part in the celebrations of the Fourth of July Statue of Liberty rededication at the Naval Review. In August 1987, the Emory S. Land served as a tactical operations center and communications base of Submarine Squadron Eight and Submarine Squadron Six in different maneuvers scenarios, both in surface combatant groups as well as supporters of the submarine battle groups.

In 1986, the ship took a 182 -day voyage in which it circled the globe once and put 26 011 nautical miles. During this trip, it visited ports in Lisbon (Portugal ), Naples ( Italy ), Port Said ( Egypt), Muscat ( Oman), Fremantle (Australia) and Rodman (Panama). Meanwhile, it served 92 days festverankert in the Arabian Gulf as a tender for the Joint Task Force Middle East and the aircraft carrier battle groups operating there.

1993 the ship served the Commander, Submarine Group Two as the flagship during his visit to Boston and served as accommodation for the commander of the Russian Northern Fleet during his visit.

The ship was stationed in La Maddalena (Italy ) from 1999 to 2007 were prepared and a single permanently of the Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet unit. As of 30 September 2007, the USS Emory S. Awards

The USS Emory S. Land has received numerous unit awards, the Meritorious Unit Commendation twice, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the four Battle Efficiency Awards. It was also won the award the unit Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial for Large Ship Food Service Excellence in 1985 and 1995.
