USS Huron (ID-1408)

The Frederick the Great was built in Stettin as Reichspostdampfer for the Australia service of the North German Lloyd. It was completed as the first ship of the Barbarossa class. She had two funnels and two masts and was on completion the largest German ship. The fact that the class (although Frederick the Great first came into service ) was not named after her, was probably due to the shipyard, which is very fast to complete that ship; or Blohm & Voss came the construction of the sister ship Barbarossa in time delay.

Use the NDL

On November 11, 1896, Frederick the Great started as Reichspostdampfer from Bremerhaven on her maiden voyage via Suez to Sydney. On this main route led them through 14 round trips; the last began on 21 January 1914. thus Frederick the Great was the first and last ship of this class of NDL on the Australia route.

On April 4, 1897, Frederick the Great went first to New York after her sister ship Queen Louise had made on March 26, the first ship of the class their maiden voyage to the United States. All sister ships came on this route regularly used, especially in the summer months, as few passengers traveled in this time to Australia. Frederick the Great began their final journey Bremerhaven - New York on 22 November 1913.

Before Frederick the Great, Kaiser Wilhelm II to his famous " Hun Speech " have kept to China on departure of the German troops on 27 July 1900. Between March 1907 and July 1912, she was used on the Mediterranean line from Genoa to New York. In March 1914, she was then first used in service to Baltimore, where their last journey led peace which they had taken on 18 July 1914.

Appearances in American services

When USA entered the war in 1917, Frederick the Great was seized, first USS Frederick the Great came the ship as USS Huron (ID- 1408 ) was used. It transported 21,871 soldiers to Europe and about 20 582 soldiers and 1,546 wounded after the conclusion of the armistice to 23 August in 1919 in the United States. 1920 to 1922 they drove for the United States Mail Steamship Company from the USA to South America. In May 1922 she became the property of the Los Angeles Steamship Company, which had already taken over the half-sister Big Elector and brought on 11 September 1922 as the City of Los Angeles to Honolulu in motion. As the former City of Honolulu Frederick the Great came on her first trip to Hawaii on October 12, 1080 km of Los Angeles on fire.
