PCU John F. Kennedy ( CVN -79) is a planned aircraft carriers of the United States Navy and the second ship in the Gerald R. Ford - class. Construction of the aircraft carrier was held in 2014 and the commissioning is to take place in 2020.
Eponym
John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) was the 35th President of the United States of America. John F. Kennedy served in World War II as a naval officer and was commander of PT- speed patrol boat PT- 109. CVN -79 is the third ship of the U.S. Navy, which is named after a member of the Kennedy family. The name John F. Kennedy wore from 1967 to 2007 the aircraft carrier CV -67.
Naming
Congressman Harry Mitchell hit on 7 December 2007, the 66th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, before that the planned aircraft carrier CVN -79 should be named after the sunken battleship in Pearl Harbor USS Arizona. 2009 made by Congressman John Shadegg the proposal to name the ship or the subsequent aircraft carrier (CVN -80) after U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona. Construction
